Chaaris are a movement vocabulary from the Natyashastra that make the building blocks of the 108 Karanas. The Chaaris are intensive lower body movements that require immense strength and balance and a clear understanding of Natyashastra technique and aesthetics. They are categorised into 16 Bhumi Chaaris and 16 Akasha Chaaris. Knowledge of Chaaris can be a great asset for classical dancers as these movements are versatile and can be easily incorporated in choreographies, especially in forms like Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and Odissi. Learning the Chaaris is also a precursor to learning the 108 Karanas which are heavily based on the usages of Bhumi and Akasha Chaaris.
