Pushpanjali is usually the first piece performed in a Bharatanatyam Margam. It begins with the offering of flowers and is followed by an invocation of a deity through a verse. This pushpanjali invokes Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the patron of arts and learning. Through this invocatory piece, the dancer pays homage to Lord Ganesha, the guru, the musicians, and the audience, creating an auspicious beginning to the performance.
